What We Do
Theater for all New Yorkers.
Our Mission
The Motor Company is dedicated to creating and producing theater that is accessible and community oriented. Our aim is to heighten our relationships to our city and surroundings by using public spaces as the impetus for storytelling and theatrical events. Our shows are always free and open to everyone.
How We Work
Since our founding in 2011, we have always operated under the belief that theater is a populist art form that relies fundamentally on the engagement and collaboration of the audience in order to thrive. By creating theater for spaces that belong to everyone rather than solely to artists, we encourage the audience to take ownership over the theatrical event as a creative partner rather than a passive spectator. Our artists incorporate municipal spaces - community gardens, parks, bars, and laundromats - into their narratives as inextricable elements rather than simply backdrops, and make space for the wider community to participate in the final performances. The result is theater that is equitable, inclusive, community-oriented, and welcoming.
